Material selection for alkali liquid delivery pump

2025/03/14

Lye is an important chemical reagent widely used in industrial production. It is extremely important to choose a suitable chemical pump for the transportation of this highly corrosive medium. In the application scenario of transporting lye, fluoroplastic pumps and stainless steel pumps are two common choices. This article will analyze in detail the characteristics of fluoroplastic and stainless steel in transporting lye, to help you better understand the advantages and disadvantages of these two materials, and then choose the most suitable pump.

Fluoroplastic pump

Fluoroplastic has excellent chemical corrosion resistance and can resist the erosion of almost all strong acids, strong alkalis and organic solvents, which makes fluoroplastic pumps perform well in conveying corrosive media. In addition, fluoroplastic has low surface energy, good self-lubricating properties, and is not easy to scale and stick, making the maintenance and care of fluoroplastic pumps relatively simple.

However, fluoroplastic pumps also have some shortcomings. The mechanical strength of fluoroplastics is relatively low, especially under high temperature conditions, the strength and rigidity of fluoroplastics will decrease significantly. Therefore, when transporting high-temperature alkali solution, fluoroplastic pumps may not be the most ideal choice.

Stainless steel pump

Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Stainless steel pumps can resist the erosion of alkali solutions and are suitable for conveying neutral or weakly alkaline media. At the same time, stainless steel pumps have high mechanical strength and can work stably under high temperature and high pressure conditions, which makes them have unique advantages in certain special working conditions. In addition, stainless steel pumps have long service life, good wear resistance and low maintenance costs.

However, the corrosion resistance of stainless steel pumps may be slightly insufficient when facing strong alkaline media. In a strong alkaline environment, pitting and stress corrosion may occur on the surface of stainless steel. Therefore, when using stainless steel pumps to transport strong alkaline solutions, the equipment must be strictly monitored and regularly maintained to ensure its long-term stable operation.

Based on the above analysis, fluoroplastic pumps and stainless steel pumps each have their own advantages and disadvantages. In the process of conveying alkali solution, we need to choose the appropriate pump material according to the specific working conditions and needs. If the alkali solution to be conveyed is of high concentration and low temperature, fluoroplastic pumps can be given priority, because their excellent corrosion resistance and portability are the biggest advantages. When conveying weak alkaline media at a certain temperature and pressure, stainless steel pumps may be more suitable, because their high mechanical strength and wear resistance can ensure the long-term stable operation of the equipment. In short, the selection of suitable pump materials requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors such as chemical properties, operating environment, and maintenance costs to ensure that the selected pump material can meet the requirements of specific conveying tasks to the greatest extent.

In actual applications, users can select the best pump material based on specific needs through technical consultation and experimental verification, so that the equipment can operate stably, efficiently and economically in the process of transporting alkali solution.
